STEP 2: NARRATIVE ESSAY
Over the decades, sexual harassment has
grown and become more severe as time progresses. Every year, the cases reported
has increased drastically. In 2020, the cases reported for sexual harassment
cases has increased by 218% from the total cases reported in 2018 and 2019. This
huge number of increasement in the reported cases has shown that sexual
harassment has turned into a social pandemic in our community. From the data
and statistics that we get from Polis Di Raja Malaysia or well known as PDRM, in
2017, Kuala Lumpur has the highest recorded cases for sexual harassment that
have been reported where the percentage is 17.2%. This is followed by Johor
with the percentage of 16.5% and Selangor with 15.7%. These three states have
contributed to half of the total cases that have been reported in 2017.
When we talk about this type of crime,
there must be perpetrators who did it, from year 2013 to the year 2017, the
perpetrators aged 18 and above are much higher in number compared to the
perpetrators aged below 18. In 2015, the number of perpetrators is the highest
where the number that can be identified by the police is around 20 people,
meanwhile, 2014 has the fewer perpetrators below 18 years old, which the number
of people that can be traced is almost zero. For the perpetrators aged above 18,
the year 2016 has recorded the highest number where there are more than 300
perpetrators detected. While 2016 has the highest record,2013 has the lowest
record of perpetrators aged above 18 where there are below 200 perpetrators
that have been recorded. This statistic has shown that sexual harassment cases are
mostly occurring among adults than people aged below 18.
In this issue, the victim is mostly women, but some men are also
being harassed. The number of men victims may be fewer, but their number is
increasing every year. From the year 2013, the number has increased drastically
from only 16 persons to more than 100 persons in 2021. This has shown that
sexual harassment can happen to both genders. Meanwhile, the cases reported for
women are much higher. From 2013 to 2017, the cases constantly increase every
year.2016 has recorded the highest reported cases which 253 cases have been
recorded by Polis Di Raja Malaysia (PDRM). In 2020, the cases of sexual
harassment have become worse where the reported cases have increased to more
than 750 reported cases. The increment of the reported cases has become a
concern for many authorities and departments to curb this issue.
